1  General Category / Suggestions for Future Club Meetings / Re: Too many internal club competition evenings? on: April 30, 2011, 07:38:50 AM
A very interesting line of thought. I can see your point. But then there has to be a panel and strict criteria on how to select such improved members. We have to remember we are all in a competitive environment. In that circumstance who can judge whom. For example I am not happy with the selection of prints/DPIs selected for external competitions. What you are saying can only happen where few people are not in a competitive position which is not possible. People come to a photographic club to do photography, not to help others. Therefore I don't think it is viable idea although it is a great idea.  Huh

Dear Committee members - Please see the link and you will know what I was talking about.

There are others links and more salons via the FIAP website. They all provide the dates for latest salons or exhibitions. This could be useful for members who are interested.  Cheesy

A horizon is always a horizon and human eyes wants to see that level. Here the horizon is not straight creating an uncanny feeling. The umbrella is too much on the right hand side of the frame almost going out of the frame. Not a very exciting image.

This is a superb piece of work. Absolute control on the lighting and the exposure. The hair is fantastic especially the bit of hair she is holding. A minor comment - the teeth is slightly overexposed. Can we tone down the frontal flash a wee bit. But well done.  Cheesy

May I request the club committee to arrange photographic workshops outside the normal Tuesdays (not on weekends please). This can be very basic or advanced, but will be taken by our club members only. I remember the workshop on mounting was particularly helpful for me. People who will be joining will be contributing towards the hire charge. We used to do this the year I joined. Last year we had none.

May I request the club committee to inform the members about all the upcoming salons in and outside UK. A few details like the salon website, fees, subject might be helpful to members who want to participate.

I do not agree to 'too many competitions'. We go to the club to learn and assess our work through a judge. This is a platform to go forward. However I would still like to learn more on photoshop advanced techniques, more camera control. We as a club can arrange certified course where we will learn and earn certificates which can be part of our professional development. I don't want to waste time going for a social evening with a bit of a photography. In my previous club (not in this country) we used to run industry recognised photography course (where I was an instructor).
8  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Why on: April 10, 2011, 08:13:40 AM
Its a very good topic. I personally want to express myself through photography. The question is what is that expression. I visualise loads of things with certain emotion, certain colour, certain form. I have stories to tell. My own journey as a person. I see the club as a platform to develop myself as a better story teller while being part of few good photographers.

Dear All

Thank you so much. Both the comments are great. I like the idea of converting into B&W and cutting the bottom half houses. I can see the picture better.

12  General Category / Technical Discussion / Re: Flash Guns Overheating on: February 25, 2011, 10:46:07 PM
I had a similar problem with Nikon flashgun. I wasn't sure what was the reason as the flash gun was constantly cutting out. Later I realised it might be for similar reason. I just never bothered to use Nikon flashgun ever after. I rather use Jessops or Nissin flashgun. Cheap but steady and reliable. Smiley
13  General Category / General Discussion / Photo selection for other competitions on: February 23, 2011, 07:41:25 PM
I have bit of a problem with the photos that are chosen for the external competitions. Is there any definite guideline or it depends on the panel of selectors? I would expect that if a certain photo is adjudged the best in our own club competition then it is definitely the one of the bests that we as a club has produced. I have no problem if another photo which has got may be 17 or 18 is also chosen. But it seems the selection do not take into account the score awarded by our own selected judges for our own club competitions. I see no reason why my wild flower which got 17 was chosen for Northwest Fed competition when none of my other photos which has got 20s are not chosen. I see a problem there in terms of benchmarking and selection. Please let me know if I am unreasonable. Roll Eyes
