Snap Happiness with Gavin Hoey

Our meeting last Tuesday (12th January) was special in a number of ways. Firstly we had an excellent speaker, Gavin Hoey, and secondly we invited members of Croxley Camera Club to join us for the evening.

Gavin’s talk was called “Snap Happiness”, and the title reflected Gavin’s attitude to photography, doing things that put a smile on his face!

In the first half, Gavin showed us how to make panoramas by stitching together photos in Photoshop and Elements. He also demonstrated his personal preference for taking selfies, whilst on holiday in Rome! In addition we were shown short videos on various challenges he’d set himself.

The second half was devoted to flash photography, using a simple portable studio with a black background, a speedlight and a softbox. When taking photos he kept the camera settings constant and varied the output of the speedlight remotely. We had a model, good old John Casson (thanks John, you have a new career opportunity awaiting)! Gavin took several photos of John with various props, culminating in the picture above. It really does look like the shepherd has lost his sheep in a snowstorm, but it was all done in our meeting room with a little help from Photoshop and Lightroom, including the glow of the brightly lit lamp.

Many thanks to Gavin for this truly excellent talk. We were also delighted to see so many from Croxley Camera Club. Thank you for coming and we hope to see you again at future events like this.
